CORALINE
WHAT YOU MAY HAVE HEARD IS TRUE: I portray the voice of the Father and Other Father in the forthcoming movie “Coraline”
I TOOK THIS JOB primarily so that I might sit for hours in a very small room with director Henry Selick, and increase my excuses for having dinner with Neil Gaiman from time to time.
BECAUSE I LIKE HANGING OUT WITH GENIUSES
ONLY NOW, however, two years after I sat in that tiny room, do I realize that THEY ACTUALLY MADE A MOVIE, and it is beautiful and creepy and brilliant.
THAT IS VERY FINE LUCK for me, and also FOR YOU. It opens on February 6. As Bruce Campbell used to say, if you like things that are good, and you want to see more good things in the future, vote with your wallet and buy a ticket.
IT WORKED FOR PAUL BLART: MALL COP!
That is all.

More synchronicity: Henry Selick will be on Hodgman’s new favorite radio variety show LIVE WIRE Jan 31st at 7 pm on KOPB. Listen live at opb.org or follow the link to podcast at livewireradio.org.
Gaiman is rumored to appear at the Portland International Film Festival coming right up.

So if I read this correctly, what you’re saying, then, is that you and Neil Gaiman were in Paul Blart: Mall Cop?!
No, I must have that wrong. This “Coraline” movie, though — that looks rather good.
Comment by Fred — January 28, 2009 @ 1:06 pm
Does one portray a voice or is this linguistic synesthesia? Not snarking, wondering aloud.
Comment by MatildaZQ — January 28, 2009 @ 1:40 pm
A correction: John Hodgman’s favorite radio show is not Live Wire. It is The Best Show On WFMU. Please adjust accordingly!
Tom.
Comment by Tom. — January 28, 2009 @ 1:58 pm
Radio VARIETY show.
Variety is the spice of life. LIVE WIRE is spicier.
Regardless, Hodgman’s palate is such that he can appreciate a wide variety of tastes in radio entertainment.
Comment by Tyler — January 28, 2009 @ 3:42 pm
Can’t wait to see the film.
Comment by Aron — January 28, 2009 @ 5:12 pm
Now, if you AND Neil Gaiman AND Bruce Campbell worked on a movie together . . . oh, that is just too much goodness to imagine.
Comment by Atticus Finch — January 28, 2009 @ 5:38 pm
Tyler -
I’m glad we agree. The Best Show On WFMU is John’s favorite radio show, and Live Wire is his favorite radio variety show.

You were all over that trailer!
Comment by Drhaggis — January 28, 2009 @ 6:02 pm
John, do you imply that on occasion you have the disposition to spend time with people who are ‘not’ of genius status? Don’t you take advantage of the prizes that innumerable wealth and Famous Minor TV Personality status affords you? As you well know, you only stand to lose precious brain cells by spending time with anyone of lesser intelligence. Scientists call it the “diffusion of all-world-knowledge across the ‘membrain’” effect.
Comment by Kim — January 28, 2009 @ 6:06 pm
What we may have heard? Didn’t YOU post about this a couple months ago?
Comment by Jacob — January 28, 2009 @ 11:12 pm
So you’re saying I should do whatever I can to attend a screening of “Coraline”, and then promote the film on ShowbizMonkeys.com (speaking of which, did anyone ever read the e-mail interview I did with Mr. Hodgman a while back? — http://www.showbizmonkeys.com/tv.php?id=1014).
Anyway, I think I will be seeing “Coraline” next Thursday. Hopefully a positive review will follow.
Comment by Paul Little — January 28, 2009 @ 11:17 pm
Oh man, I wish I could see this movie, but I read the book aloud to Maddie and it scared me so much that I can’t bear to think about it, let alone watch it. Gaiman is a genius, a scary scary genius.

Whoo-hoo! This is very exciting! Rosie saw the preview and was excited… and she didn’t even know you were in it.

I just saw the duet you sung with Jonathan Coulton after watching that whole video about your new book– you did a great job describing the types of situations in the book. I think I will definitely give it a look
You’re so talented though. I think you did a great job singing that.. I wish you buddies had a MP3 of it somewhere.

I just saw Coraline and it was SOOOO good! Did Jonathan Coulton write the song about Coraline that you sing?? Go good movies!
Comment by k8 — February 8, 2009 @ 11:41 pm
Your voice was underutilized! Coincidentally I heard you on Wait Wait en route to the theater, and the bad-radio-antenna snippet was a more sturdy representation of your wit than what was used in the movie. Still: good film, hurrah.

My 2nd time seeing Coraline (2.15.09) and still my favorite scenes are within you in them. Favorite song is Other Father on my iPhone. Way too obsessed for my age
AWESOME JOB!
