I HAVE RETURNED FROM THE BOHEMIAN GROVE

I HAVE RETURNED FROM THE BOHEMIAN GROVE known as “TED”

MANY OF YOU WANT TO KNOW what sort of strange rituals go on there.

I AM HERE TO TELL YOU: there is no giant wooden owl called Moloch.

THERE IS ONLY GILBERT.

LIZ GILBERT IS, of course, the author of PILGRIMS and STERN MEN and the article that became the movie “Coyote Ugly,” and she is a dear and old friend. So dear and old that I often forget that she also wrote an amazing super bestseller that you may have read.

(SHE IS ALSO A VERY FINE SINGER. Listen to the end of this link for the EVIDENCE)

BUT WHILE SHE IS ADORED in this video, and I adore her as well, the magical thing you may not be able to get through this embedded video is how skeptical the audience initially was of her, and how masterfully she won over this bunch of jaded billionaire/genius TEDTOPIANS through simple, good storytelling.

That is all.

  1. Three things. 1. This was a great talk. 2. Did you speak at this TED? 3. My lady and I went to see Coraline on Saturday. You were great!

  2. Wow. I wasn’t too sure at first either but I think she might have something there. Even if it makes her and myself crazy old men shouting at windmills…it might be a price worth paying.

Please bare in mind that I saw all this while I should be doing something heroic and creative so…

  3. This talk almost made me cry. I have dreams of writing but I also happen to find all sorts of reasons to repress them which is becoming an issue because I get bored, bitter and depressed. I hope I’ll find the strength to do my part of the job and let the rest go. Thanks a lot.

  5. Omg.

    YOU ARE ON THE INTERNETS!!!!!

    I love you.

This discovery makes me excited in the pants!! I am now stalking you….NO WAIT!! I am supposed to use the word following…..on Twitter.

This has nothing to do with your post, but you knew that.

  6. I needed to see that for so many reasons. Thank you.

  7. Geez, John! I’m so jealous of your TEDventures. Going to TED is in my three-year plan.

As a creative, scientific person with mild-but-present neuroses, I found solace in Miss Gilbert’s talk.

  8. Good clip. Thanks for posting that.

  9. This reminded me of my dad and his banjo. At fifty he bought a banjo and started to learn how to play it. After two years of practicing, lessons and banjo camp, he’s starting to despair of ever being able to reach a level beyond beginner. He gets satisfaction from the process of doing what he loves, but without success it is discouraging.

How do you know what you were put on this world to do? What if you’re only mediocre at it? What if all the other people who were put on this earth to do the same thing laugh at you? Where does the satisfaction come from?

I understand Elizabeth Gilbert’s theory. I wonder, though, what the bigger fear is: that you won’t have another moment of transcendence, or that you’ll never have that moment at all. Maybe part of her point was to not let the fear keep you from going. It seems like a rational fear, but…
Anyway, it was a good speech. Not only did it give me a lot to think about, it made refrences to fairy juice, Harry Potter and Tom Waits. Gilbert’s a great writer. I admire “Pilgrims” very much. Thanks for sharing the video.

  10. [...] I have to think about things for a few weeks. For example, I have some choice thoughts about the TED talk by Liz Gilbert on Genius. But so does everyone else. And by the time I have my thoughts worked out, it will be as quaint and [...]

  11. I was unfamiliar with her work, so when I sent this link to my friends before discovering it here as well, it was met with mild disdain. I insisted that they watch and I think they were as transformed in their prejudices as the TED crowd. The speech was outstanding, as mayn TED speeches are. Brava, Ms. Gilbert.
