I WAS JUST ON THE RADIO

GOOD MORNING and

THANK YOU, everyone, for your kind words regarding my remarks to the world press and the President of the United States last Friday.

YOUR THOUGHTFUL COMMENTS have emboldened me to believe: IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED. (And please stay tuned for some footnotes on the illustrations)

I WAS JUST ON the great WNYC show The Takeaway discussing it, and because radio is fast, and I am slow, I was left with a bunch of notes for things I did not have time to say.

BUT BECAUSE THIS IS THE INTERNET, which offers no such sensible restraints, I share it with you here.

ON THE SUBJECT OF JOCK v. NERD, look: I don’t want to make too much of this.

OF COURSE I was being somewhat reductive for the sake of comedy.

BUT ESSENTIALLY I was talking about a difference of philosophy that sort of begins in high school, around the time most people are exposed to team sports and math, and they choose a path.

JOCKISM IS NOT ABOUT ATHLETICS per se. It’s a philosophy–of certainty vs. endless nerdish questioning; of happy conformity, vs. nerdish loner ostracisim. Jockism is suspicious of complexity, because that’s how you lose games. It’s more comfortable with what it can see, touch, feel, punch.

JOCKISM is actually a great way to win a sports game or a ground war. But, gratefully, in this country at least that’s not what most adults ever have to do in their lives.

NERDISM conveys a certain comfort with technology, a certain faith in science to be sure, but also, it builds its teams around abstractions, ideas, weird enthusiasms. From Battlestar Galactica to cosplay to steampunk; from spirit photography to antique cocktails; from political news to even sports*, paradoxically, and, as well, the idea of free and fair elections in Iran.

AND AS THE INTERNET is the greatest idea propagation engine ever invented, It’s no surprise that global geekism is on the rise

I SAID ON FRIDAY HOW CURIOUS it was that the fate of the protesters in Iran is so strangely entwined with the sleep schedule of the geeks maintaining the servers at twitter and YouTube.

THAT THE PROTESTERS’ STRUGGLE IS VISIBLE, on a granular, person by person level, gives those protesters crucial optimism that their efforts are not wasted; and it gives we viewers a new window upon a remote land and culture.

AND WHAT ME MOSTLY SEE is similarity.

YOUNG PEOPLE, CLOSER TO US in wardrobe, vision, and optimism, than we might have thought. And though great divides may yet separate us, the protesters are similar in at least one way: they all use the internet. And not in the insidious, demonizing way we were warned of, to recruit terrorists and plan attacks on civilians. But in the most geekish way: to subvert authority with an idea.

WHEN IT HAS COME to democratizing the Middle-East, we’ve now witnessed two different approaches.

ONE, INCREDIBLY JOCKISH: an invasion, a top-down imposition of a new kind of order.

THE OTHER, IS DIFFUSED, SPONTANEOUS, founded on ideas and spread by technology. If the protesters in Iran have never heard of Doctor Who, their efforts now are undeniably geekish.**

WE’LL SEE which effort is more successful. And I mean this truly, for it is the essence of geek to admit: I do not know.

WE’LL SEE.

That is all.

*(AS I’VE MENTIONED BEFORE, Any fantasy baseballist has more in common with someone who dresses as an orc on weekends than an actual athlete, because they are analyzing and processing massive data, and communicating with unknown others on the web.)

** WHICH IS NOT TO SAY that they won’t need to organize some jockish kick-ass conformity before it’s all done.

UPDATED to clean up some very embarrassing typos and, as per the comments, to spell out DOCTOR in Doctor Who.

  1. That is both a) thoughtfully and well-said and b) encouraging (possibly too encouraging) to all of us who have been waiting since age fifteen for a day when geek power peacefully trumps jock force. We would then live in a questioner’s world, instead of constantly being poked in the face by people who claim to have answers; and as a bonus gift, we could cash in on all our revenge fantasies from high school.

This reminds me of one of my most formative moments, of watching students standing in front of tanks in Tiennamen Square, the summer after I graduated high school — and realizing that if I lived “there,” not “here” I would likely have been one of those students. Perhaps the truest (and craziest) sort of idealist, is the one who stands before the tank, not because she is convinced that the outcome will go as it should, not because she is convinced that this is even the best course of action, but because she believes in some sort of hope and that peaceful action with questioning is better than acceptance or bullying. But I, like you, am a geek, and thus I have to admit I don’t know.

Especially fantasy baseballists who name their teams (and players) in homage to Tolkien? (http://solonor.com/baseball/)

  6. I found your excellent comments -both then and now- to be adroit and prophetic. Just plain “wow”, sir! Thank you for such a wonderful series of statements, including the caution for restraint in our enthusiasm that “this is only a beginning”. That can be applied to so much more than the Obama Administration, be it -as you allude- reform in Iran or so many other things that we Geeks care about. You rolled a natural ‘20′, Mr. Hodgman!

  7. I loved your speech, particularly your interpretation of the jock versus geek views of the world. You eloquently expressed many of the incoherent feelings I’ve had for some time now about these two perspectives. Your final words to our president touched me particularly, as I have found it challenging to maintain my enthusiasm for Mr. Obama’s presidency in the face of his not-altogether-unexpected stance on LGBT rights. Bravo!

  9. Helium head, well played although the real world is crammed with jock type jobs. I understand making shit up like mole man names is nothing like opening the neck of a patient with a big assed cancer near their co rotted artery or even building a five story building or repairing the jet engine that carriees your lilly white candy and cocopuff filled ass in a cigar tube thousands of feet in the air.

That said sir your genuflecting for our new guy, the points you conjure up in your helium filled world of audacity and orcs well Okay but..

It all comes down to rewarding and building good habits that build great character…

  18. Dear John –

It’s Heather here. I’m, as of Friday night, the former Chair of the RTCA. And I’m someone who can’t read Excel manuals before I go to bed because learning new Excel shortcuts makes me so excited I can’t go to sleep, you can imagine how thrilled I was to have you with us Friday night. So while I can’t name answer the 3-part Dune question, I can tell you all about how to use the Solver function in Excel. For some time now, friends have been saying that my love of liner integer programing, Congressional politics and journalism qualifies as a geek or as my gentleman caller says a “hot librarian”. In a world of jocks, fellow nerds, geeks and librarians need their props too.

So you probably understand why now, I am so proud that you were there with us Friday night. Your performance, writing, analysis and humor were beyond my wildest dreams. Plus you are such a kind soul you are. Truly, John, you are a class act and working with you made me a better person. I am very thankful that you accepted our invitation to perform. Your presence Friday night was a precious gift for all of us. -Heather

While I wouldn’t ask this question for a comedy routine you are analyzing your own words in a more serious vein, both here and on Countdown. So my question is why did you focus on athletes as “gods among us” and not also add a similar “scientist as gods among us” for the geek analog?
