CORALINE AND THE OSCARS: A TRAVESTY
I CANNOT EXPRESS my happiness for Henry Selick, Neil Gaiman, and all the crazy tiny-sweater-knitters and miniature-rat-wranglers, regarding the Oscar nomination of the film, CORALINE.
I HOPE THE ACADEMY LIKES CRYSTAL HEAD VODKA, because they are going to be getting a lot of it from me in a shameless attempt to buy their vote.
BUT BRIBERY IS NOT NECESSARY. It is an astonishing film, and I am so proud to be a part of it.
ONE TRAVESTY, however, is that THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS were not nominated for BEST SONG.
WITNESS:
THAT’S JOHN LINNELL SINGING, of course. Not me. I did record a version of the song, but thankfully, they came to their senses.
That is all.

That’s a surprising shame.

I feel that your version of the song must needs be released into the untrammeled wild.

I am very excited for them as well. It was a a phenomenally well made movie based on a phenomenally well written book. And you were a fabulous Father, other and all. And if I keep on writing I am sure I can find some more gratuitous adjectives to mix in here that would be stupendously suitable.

Mazel tov to the Coraline crew for the nomination. It was a wonderful movie.
I had been hoping it would get nominated for Best Score, too. I’m not normally the type to notice the score, but Coraline’s was hypnotic.

This is nice news, indeed and I will refrain from my periodic rant about the meaninglessness of this private industry party, though I may exude snarky fumes about it on my web page at a more relevant time (like just before Oscar night).
I want to thank you again for your sage response to my question at Cobb’s Club on Saturday regarding online publishing. (Also: I swear, I have NOT washed my hand since you high-fived it!)
I have proceeded with publishing an old and very entertaining farcical screenplay of mine, called “Whackers” at Smashwords Publishing. I discuss the matter on my web page and the screenplay (which is FREE and can be read on your i-Phone during plane trips, long bus rides and even longer waits at the dentist office!) is at https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/9295
Thank you for allowing me to selfishly exploit this space in my ruthless attempt to gain attention.

Every nomination for Coraline is so throughly well deserved. It’s an amazing film. Whenever I see it, I just wish that, even just once in my life, even playing the smallest of roles, I’d be able to help create something so wonderful.
I totally agree with Matt above about the score. It was so unique and so perfect for the film. It should have been nominated. At least, I think so, for what it’s worth.
And, that They Might Be Giants song is one of my favorite moments in the movie. All I wish is that it were longer.

Coraline was a terribly depressing and dull film. Good animation can’t make up for a bad story.

Loved the movie and particularly loved this song and appreciated the artistic guts of keeping it so brief. Would love to hear the Hodgman version.

I can see why the song was not nominated since it was relatively small… The true TRAVESTY is that the entire score didn’t get nominated…Rarely do I simply listen to a movie soundtrack without watching the movie at the same time…

I watched the Oscars the other night and flared up,finding out that the movie “up” won for best animation!I don’t like “up.”I love “Coraline” more.
