I specifically recall the end credits claiming copyright for the Presidential Inaugural Committee (or some such entity) – not HBO. So I they must have some licensing deal. Which means they have rights (probably exclusive) to that particular audio/video recording of Pete Seeger singing “This Land Is Your Land”. Pete Seeger might be a tad cheesed if they held some broader rights to the song he probably performs more frequently than any other.

HBO suppressed the YouTube clip of Woodie Guthrie playing at the Yavin awards ceremony, too. It’s the oldest story there is.
Between BAND OF BROTHERS and THE WIRE, though, they’ve still got some goodwill capital to spend with me.

I read somewhere where HBO only has broadcast rights for six months. After that, I would assume that the rights would go back to the Inaugural Committee. Knowing Obama, I would guess that it’ll be free after that.
