It’s super frustrating when it’s raining outside, especially if you had plans to be out and about in the great outdoors. However, it’s got to rain sometimes, and when it does, it pays to be prepared. There are plenty of ways you can spend your time, from the sensible option of getting yourself organised for sunnier days, to the downright fun option of kicking back and enjoying some couch potato time.

Here are some of the ways you can spend that rainy afternoon, that don’t involve just hoping the sun will show its face again.

Procrastinate Away with Some Poker

Whiling away a rainy afternoon with nothing more than a deck of cards is a memory that many of us will be familiar with. However, if you don’t have the luxury of people to play cards with at home, then don’t worry, there are plenty of companies that offer the opportunity to play cards with people from across the world.

Online casino company, PokerStars has launched a mobile app that allows you to play poker on any Android device. As well as keeping you amused when it’s too wet to go outside, poker can also help kick your brain into gear and get that grey matter moving. So much for mobile gaming slowing us down!

Get Your Brain in Gear with Some Chess

Another game that’s popular for dusting away the cobwebs is chess. Like poker, it’s widely available on your computer or as an app, with the most popular provider being chess.com. Chess involves intense concentration, so what feels like just a couple of minutes can sometimes be hours if you get really absorbed.

As well as being great fun and an easy way to spend hours, chess has also been proven to boost our brain function. So if you want to procrastinate and be productive at the same time then chess could be the game for you.

Throw a Dinner Party

If you’re sick of the weather outside then the chances are your friends probably are too. The best parties are impromptu ones, so why not throw a dinner party? Most of us have enough food in the cupboards to rustle up something delicious and if not, then make just a main dish and ask your friends to bring sides or dessert.

Other than food there aren’t too many other things you need to worry about when hosting a dinner party. Making sure that everyone has something to eat and drink is paramount, and sticking on a relaxing playlist never goes amiss.

Get Your Week in Order

If you just can’t bear procrastination, then a rainy afternoon could actually be a blessing in disguise. Sometimes, the best time to be productive is when you have no other choice. Use your rainy afternoon to make sure that everything is set up for the week ahead.

A good way to do this is to start meal prepping. If you cook a few different meals in bulk over the course of a couple of hours and freeze them or even just refrigerate them, you could save hours of cooking time during the week. Prepping meals is also a great way to ensure that you don’t give in to takeaway temptation during the week, which is good for your waistline and good for the budget.

Start Reading the Classics

You know all of those books that you really should have read, but haven’t? Now is a great time to pull one of them off the shelf and get started. Feeling as though you are well read is wonderful and it’s super easy to achieve. Besides, there’s nothing more cosy than sitting in a snug, warm house with a great book and listening to the rain pouring down outside.

Of course, there are some of us that just struggle to sit still, in which case you could try an audiobook. A really pleasant way of meal prepping, is to set out your ingredients and get cooking with an audiobook in the background. For those of us that are obsessed with productivity, that really is a great way of killing two birds with one stone.
